Planning

When to go, month by month

There is no month when the delta trips stop. The dry months are easiest on the boats, the wet months are greener and quieter, April is the hottest, September the wettest, and the fruit comes in summer. Here is what each month means on the four trips.

3 = easiest, 2 = good, 1 = wettest or most disrupted. All months run; the chart shows comfort, not closure.

The national tourism authority puts the easiest time for boat trips and floating markets from December to April, the dry season, and the orchard peak from May to August. In Can Tho the rainy season runs from May to November; one of its own pages gives July to November instead, which shows how loosely the edges fall.

Month by month

MonthsWeather in Can Tho (mean high / rain)What it means on the trips
December – FebruaryAbout 30–31 °C; under 50 mm of rain a monthCalm, dry, the most comfortable boats; busiest with visitors, and Lunar New Year traffic
March – AprilAbout 33–34 °C; very little rainDry and hot; start early, rest after lunch
May – AugustAbout 31–33 °C; 220–340 mm, short heavy showersFruit season in the orchards; greener; afternoons often break into rain
September – OctoberAbout 31 °C; 300–450 mm, the wettestMost rain; king tides can flood riverside streets in Can Tho in October
NovemberAbout 31 °C; about 140 mmRain easing; tides still high early in the month

Rain in the delta usually comes in heavy bursts rather than all-day drizzle, so a wet-season trip often means a dry morning and a stormy hour in the afternoon. Boats run in ordinary rain.

Heat: March to May

April is the hottest month, with a mean daily high of about 34 °C in Can Tho and a record of 40 °C. Heat, not rain, is what spoils a delta day for most visitors. In these months take the earliest start you can, drink more than you think you need, and keep the middle of the day for lunch in the shade. A private day helps most here, because you choose the hours.

King tides and high water: October and November

In the lower delta, high water is less about river floods than about tides. In 2025 the downstream peaks, including at Can Tho and My Thuan, fell around 10 to 12 October and 8 to 9 November, and riverside streets in Can Tho and Vinh Long flooded at the highest tides; residents were told to limit travel around 05:00 to 08:00 and 16:00 to 19:00. Parts of the Ninh Kieu riverfront may be under water at those hours.

For the two-day trip this matters in two ways: the walk to the Ninh Kieu wharf may be wet, and the boat timing may shift. We check the tide dates for your night when we confirm.

Fruit, flowers and mosquitoes

The orchards on the Ben Tre side, around Cho Lach, are at their fullest from about May to August, when rambutan, durian, longan and guava come in. The flower villages are busiest in the weeks before Lunar New Year.

The wet months are also mosquito months. Dengue in Vietnam peaks from June to October, mostly in the centre and the south; repellent matters more then than at any other time of year.

Weekdays, weekends and holidays

The calendar month matters less than the day of the week. Congestion on the Ho Chi Minh City–Trung Luong expressway is frequent at weekends and on public holidays, and queues at the junctions near My Tho on New Year's Day 2026 were long. A Tuesday in September can be an easier day out than a Saturday in January.

Lunar New Year

The weeks before Lunar New Year are when the delta's flower villages are busiest, and many visitors want to see them. They are also the weeks when the roads out of Ho Chi Minh City are at their most crowded, as families travel home to the delta, and when vehicles and guides are hardest to book. During the holiday itself some family workshops and restaurants may close; we check what is open for your date.

If your dates fall in this period, book as early as you can, choose a private trip with an early start, and expect the drive to take longer than the ranges on this site.

Which trip, which month

  • December to April: any of the four; the Can Tho trip is at its most comfortable on the water.
  • March to May: the private Ben Tre day with a 07:00 start.
  • May to August: the Cai Be day or My Tho and Ben Tre for the orchards.
  • September to November: any day trip on a weekday; for the two-day trip, check the tide dates first.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Is the rainy season a bad time to go?

Not usually. Rain tends to come in short heavy bursts, often in the afternoon, and the boats keep running. September and October are the wettest months.

Does the floating market close in any season?

We know of no closed season at Cai Rang. What changes is how many boats come, which has fallen as much trade has moved to trucks.

What is the hottest month?

April, with a mean daily high of about 34 °C in Can Tho. March and May are close behind.

Is Lunar New Year a good time?

The flower villages are at their busiest, but roads and prices are at their worst. If you go, book early and expect long drives.
