Can Tho, for the market at first light

The delta's main city, on the Hau River about 171 km from Ho Chi Minh City. It is the base for Cai Rang, the floating market that still trades, smaller than it was and busiest between about 06:00 and 07:30. That hour is why Can Tho needs a night.

What Can Tho really is

Can Tho is a large modern city, not a riverside village. It has an airport, wide boulevards and heavy traffic. Since 1 July 2025 it is larger still, having absorbed the former provinces of Soc Trang and Hau Giang. For visitors the part that matters is small: the Ninh Kieu riverfront in the centre, the wharf where the market boats leave, and the stretch of the Hau River down to Cai Rang.

That is enough. The riverfront has a pedestrian bridge built in 2016 and a night market that opens after about 16:00. Hotels in the centre are within walking distance of the wharf. A one-night stay here is less about the city than about being on the water at the hour the market works.

Cai Rang today

Cai Rang floating market is about 6 km from central Can Tho on the Hau River, about 30 to 40 minutes by boat from the Ninh Kieu wharf. Wholesale boats anchor mid-river and hang a sample of what they sell from a tall pole so buyers can see it from a distance. Smaller boats move between them selling noodle soup, which traders and visitors eat for breakfast on the water. In 2016 the culture of the market was recognised as national intangible heritage.

It is also a market in decline. A 2020 report already warned that road building and riverbank embankments were shrinking its trading space. Traders have moved goods to trucks as roads and bridges improved, COVID sped that up, and a growing share of the boats are tourist boats. Published estimates of how many trading boats remain disagree too widely to quote. Expect a working wholesale market at a fraction of its old size.

Timing is everything. Trading is busiest from about 06:00 to 07:30 and drops away after 08:00. To be there at the start you leave your hotel at about 05:00 to 05:30.

Other things to do

  • Binh Thuy ancient house, built in 1870 by the Duong family, about 8 km from the centre. Entry was VND 15,000 in 2023, with opening hours published then as 08:00–12:00 and 14:00–18:00; check locally.
  • The Ninh Kieu riverfront and night market in the evening, after about 16:00.
  • Con Son islet, about 7 km from the centre, where a farming cooperative runs half-day visits; about VND 250,000 per person in 2023.
  • Food: hu tieu for breakfast, and duck stewed in fermented tofu (vit nau chao) as a Can Tho dinner.

Why one night is the minimum

Can Tho is 3 to 3.5 hours from central Ho Chi Minh City in ordinary traffic. To reach Cai Rang by 06:00 on a day trip you would leave the city at about 02:00 to 02:30; leaving at a normal hour puts you on the river after 09:00, when most trading boats have gone. A night in Can Tho turns a 02:00 start into a 05:30 one and makes the drive back a daytime drive.

Two nights add little for a market visit. They make sense only if you want to go further, which is beyond what this site offers.

Getting there

By road the route is the Ho Chi Minh City–Trung Luong expressway, the Trung Luong–My Thuan expressway, the My Thuan 2 bridge and the 23 km My Thuan–Can Tho expressway opened in December 2023: about 171 km, 3 to 3.5 hours. Public buses take about four hours, with one-way fares of about VND 170,000 to 260,000, and leave from the Mien Tay bus station among others; they arrive at a terminal about 4 km outside the centre.

Can Tho International Airport (VCA) has domestic flights. In town, taxis are easy to find and Grab operates.

  • If you expect hundreds of trading boats, as in older photographs
  • On the highest tide days in October and November, unless you accept a wet riverfront
