Two boats on the Tien River, one crowded with a tour group and one carrying a small private party

Join-in or private: what actually changes

Both put you on the same river. What changes is who shares your vehicle and your boat, when you are collected, how long the day lasts and how much you can bend it. This page compares the two for each of our four routes, with the published times each comparison rests on.

The comparison, route by route

RouteJoin-in: leaves → backJoin-in: group and vehiclePrivate: pick-up → backRoad time, round tripBiggest difference

Join-in times are from published schedules of operators in Ho Chi Minh City; private times are typical plans and one published private listing. Road time is a range built from route-planner distances at ordinary speeds; weekend and holiday traffic can add an hour or more. Your own times are on your confirmation.

What a join-in day is like

You are collected in the central wards, either at your hotel or at a meeting point a short walk away. The vehicle may stop at several hotels before it leaves the city, so the time on your ticket is when collection starts, not when the drive starts. The size of the vehicle depends on how many people booked that date: operators in the city list a car, a minivan or a bus for the same route. One guide speaks to everyone, in English.

On the river the group shares the boats. The plan is fixed: the order of stops, the lunch place, the time back at the vehicle. If you are slow at one stop, the group waits; if someone else is slow, you wait. That is the bargain, and for one or two travellers it is usually a good one. You pay a share of the vehicle, the guide and the boats instead of all of it, and you meet other people on the way.

What a private day is like

The car or minivan comes to your hotel at the time you chose and leaves straight away. The guide is yours: you can ask questions all day, change the order of stops, skip the pagoda, spend an extra half hour on the rowing boat, stop for a photograph by a bridge. Lunch happens when you are hungry. If a child falls asleep, the day waits.

Two practical gains matter more than people expect. First, you can start earlier; in the hot months an 07:00 start puts you on the water before the heat builds. Second, you can end earlier and miss the evening traffic into the city. On the Can Tho trip, private also means your own boat to Cai Rang at about 05:30, which is the difference between seeing the market at its busiest and seeing it as it thins out.

Why the prices differ

A day trip's main costs are fixed per vehicle and per guide. On a join-in day they are divided across the whole group; on a private day they are divided across your party. That is why a private day for two costs far more per person than a join-in place, while a private day for six can come close.

Published prices in the city show the shape of it. A join-in My Tho and Ben Tre day is published from about VND 499,000 per adult at one operator and USD 48 per adult in a shared minivan at another. A private guided day is published at USD 330 per group of up to eight; split four ways that is about USD 83 each, split six ways about USD 55. Those are other operators' prices, read on 11 October 2026, and they include different things; they are here to show the slope, not to quote ours.

When join-in is the right choice

  • You are one or two travellers and the budget matters more than the pace
  • You are staying in the central wards, so collection is easy
  • You are happy with the standard order of the day and a set lunch
  • You like meeting other travellers
  • You are doing My Tho and Ben Tre, the route with the most join-in departures

When private is the right choice

  • You are four or more, so the per-person price comes close to join-in
  • You are travelling with young children, older relatives or anyone who walks slowly
  • You want Cai Rang at its busiest hour on the two-day trip
  • You want to start early in the hot months, or be back before the evening traffic
  • You are staying outside the central wards and want collection from your door

Decide in five steps

  1. Pick the route first. If a floating market is essential, it is Can Tho; otherwise compare the drive times.
  2. Count your party. One or two, lean to join-in; four or more, ask for a private price.
  3. Check your hotel's location. Inside the central wards, join-in collection is simple.
  4. Look at the hours. Join-in days are fixed and longer at both ends; private days bend.
  5. Send the form with “undecided” if you still cannot choose. We will price both and say which we would take.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

How many people are on a join-in day?

It depends on bookings for that date. Operators in the city publish minimums, such as two for a shared minivan or six for a Cai Be departure, but not maximums. Your confirmation names the vehicle type.

Is the guide's English the same on both?

Every trip has an English-speaking guide. On a join-in coach the guide speaks to the whole group; on a private day you can ask questions all day.

Can a join-in tour collect from my hotel outside the centre?

Usually not. Join-in collection is in the central wards of the former District 1. Outside them we suggest a meeting point or price a private collection.

Is private worth it for two people?

It depends on what you value. For two on a budget, join-in usually makes more sense. For two who want an early start, a quieter day or the dawn boat at Cai Rang, private is the way to get them.
